Abstrak

The population of Javan langurs is expected to continue to decline in line with the reduction of forests in Java. The Telaga Warna and Jember Nature Reserves and Parks are among the conservation areas inhabited by this endemic primate, but information on their population and habitat conditions has never been conducted. This study aims to estimate the population density and habitat suitability of the Javan langur in the area. The survey was conducted in June to September 2024 at the Telaga Warna and Jember Nature Reserves and Parks. Population surveys and presence point collections were conducted using two transect with length of 1-3 km. Habitat suitability was identified using environmental variables including average annual rainfall, average annual temperature, land cover, normalized different vegetation index, slope, distance from river, distance from settlement, distance from plantation, and distance from forest edge which were then predicted using the Maximum Entropy algorithm. Individual and group densities of Javan langurs were estimated at 14.3 ind/km2 and 1.6 groups/km2, respectively. The model shows that suitable habitat (125.6 ha) for the Javan Langur is still limited compared to unsuitable habitat (424.6 ha). Moreover, the suitable habitats also tend to be centralized in Nature Tourism Parks. This information can serve as fundamental information in the in-situ conservation policy of the Javan langur.
